Tory government elected with Thatcher as Prime Minister. Council control passes between Labour and an alliance of the Liberals and Tories.

Riots break out in Toxteth.

Population of the city down to 460,000.

May elections: Labour gains twelve seats on council to take control.

June 9: General election results in landslide victory for the Tories nationally, but Labour wins five out of six seats in Liverpool, including the Tory marginal of Broadgreen won by Terry fields. 

For the first time this century there are no Tory MPs representing a Liverpool seat.

November19: Demonstration called in support of the council attracts the support of 25000.
