Tony Mulhearn and Derek Hatton outside Labour Party HQ. Tony Mulhearn  expelled from the Labour Party at 1am.
January 26: Councilors appeal to the Law Lords.

March 12: Law Lords dismiss councilors’ appeal and impose £242,000 costs on top of the original £106,000 surcharge. 

The councilors are dismissed from office. 

A Liberal-Tory junta takes control of the council.

May 7: Labour fights the election on the slogan of ’We Support the 47’. 

They win historic victory to regain control of the council. Tories reduced to four councilors.

June11: General election. Tories returned to power. 

A huge swing to Labour in Liverpool which, if repeated nationally, would have meant a landslide Labour victory.
